She joined Hannah Cockroft on her lap of honour after finishing seventh behind Britain’s double gold medallist in the T34 200 metres in London 2012.But four years on, Mel Nicholls believes she has a real chance of causing an upset and beating Cockroft in one of her three events in next month’s Rio Paralympic Games. In London, the T34 track races were sprints – 100 and 200 metres – but in Rio there will be a T34 100 metres, a 400 metres and an 800 metres, a race which gives the mid-distance specialist Nicholls a much better chance of a medal. She told Disability News Service: “I have definitely got a chance.”A silver medal in the 800 metres at last year’s world championships was a “great boost”, she said, coming as it did soon after an injury lay-off.She’s world record-holder at 1,500 metres and loves the tactics of the longer races.Nicholls (pictured) said: “I am much more of a distance racer, I am not a sprinter. It definitely goes in my favour.“[The 800 metres] is still a short middle distance but you have got a good lap of time for some tactics, which I absolutely love. That’s my thing.“I see it as like a game of chess. Once you’re into the rhythm you can kind of see it… I know where people are, I know what I can do, and you just play it out, and that makes it really exciting.“With the 800, it’s almost anybody’s race. There are about five of us who can medal. I definitely want to be in that top five.”London 2012 was her first major competition as a wheelchair athlete, and she took part just four years after the last of three strokes which left her disabled. The build-up to Rio has been completely different to London, when she was “a complete unknown”.She said: “I wasn’t on the radar [at London]. I am now. I put a lot of pressure on myself, but since London I’ve been on the team and it’s my job, so there is a lot of different pressure.“That’s really exciting, but it’s a very different feeling.”Nicholls describes herself as a “perfectionist”, both as a person and as an athlete. She said: “There’s no harder taskmaster than I am on myself. You want to be the best you can be.“Also, I don’t want to let my team down. I’m really part of the team. My coaches, the country, everybody that’s invested in me and the sport, I feel I owe them back.“Always I want to please people; I want to please my coaches, my friends, my family. I work myself the hardest because I don’t want to let anybody down.”She copes with the stress and pressure partly through support from a sports psychologist and mindfulness training, which she said has “probably been my biggest help in my training”.The mindfulness proved crucial at last year’s world championships, she said, when she had only returned to training a month before, after an injury, and was lacking in confidence. She said: “I got a silver medal and it was my mind that got me through that race. Your mind is powerful and you can do a lot with that.”Like many Paralympians, she has had to make sacrifices. She hasn’t seen her mother, who lives in France, since last year.Nicholls said: “I don’t see my friends very much; sometimes they can get quite frustrated about that. I don’t see my family.“They understand that. It’s a short time and a small price to pay, I think. I know that they are there backing me and afterwards it will be worth it.”She is looking forward to the “vibrance and the colour” of Rio – “I am a fan of bright colour, everyone knows me for always being in pink” – and to being part of a team environment again. She said: “That was the main thing I noticed from London. I had never been in a team environment before and it felt like a big family.“The people supporting you back home and the team around us, it was a big family, and everyone was there for the highs and the lows.”She said that putting on the Rio 2016 ParalympicsGB team kit for the first time was “wonderful”.She said: “Putting on the kit is something really special. I can imagine putting on a wedding dress, it’s that kind of experience… I will take this over getting married any day.”She added: “We have this amazing crown design, which I absolutely love. It’s very regal. I love the royal family, I absolutely love the Queen, so I think it’s fantastic. If I could wear a crown to race, I would.”Like many Paralympians, she is hoping to inspire the next generation of athletes, as she was inspired herself by watching the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. She remembers joining Cockroft on her 200 metres lap of honour in London. She said: “It was the children, their faces, and they all wanted to high-five you. You could see the magic in their eyes, and that was really special, and that was disabled children or able-bodied children.“For me, if one person is going to take up sport, that’s such a positive, that’s what I want to do.”Nicholls put her wish to inspire the next generation of Paralympic athletes into action five years ago by starting an academy with her coach, basing it at the Coventry Godiva Harriers athletics club. There is now a core group of at least 10 athletes at every session, three times a week, and another 40 people who drop in and out; some of those who attend the sessions are amateurs and some of them professional athletes. She said: “Some of the children do it because it’s a social thing, they have friends there, but they are getting better and better.“The older guys want to come and get fit because they haven’t had the opportunity before.“So we have Paralympic athletes training with everyone else; everyone just mixes in.“It’s a social thing, it’s a confidence thing, a health thing and a competitive thing as well.”One of those training with her at the academy is 15-year-old Kare Adenegan, who watched Nicholls and Cockroft race four years ago in London and made headlines last September after becoming the first athlete to beat Cockroft in her senior career.Adenegan will be racing alongside and against both Nicholls and Cockroft in Rio.
Add to Queue Twitter January 18, 2017 Columnist at PCMag.com Twitter’s problems stem from being a modern tech company that isn’t growing fast enough. I have two solutions. Learn from renowned serial entrepreneur David Meltzer how to find your frequency in order to stand out from your competitors and build a brand that is authentic, lasting and impactful. Image credit: Shutterstock Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brand This story originally appeared on PCMag 3 min read Enroll Now for $5 –shares There has been a lot of discussion about Twitter lately, most of it negative — it can’t make money on advertising, growth is down and online bullies remain a problem.Meanwhile, Donald Trump tweets daily; more every day since the election. This alone, you’d think, would draw more attention to Twitter and make it more popular. Twitter actually does over $2.5 billion in revenue, but tech companies are supposed to grow like crazy, not freeze up at a mere $2.5 billion dollars, which is ludicrous. With that revenue, all Twitter needs to do is have a bunch of sales folks sell the ads and a slew of IT guys keep the thing running. That should not cost billions, although it looks like it does.So what’s the solution to this “problem”?When I listen to all the pundits, I see two solutions. The first is never brought up for any other billion-dollar company: stabilization. In other words, do nothing. In tech, there is a never-ending mad dash for growth. It stems from the late 1990s, when one company would replace another after the simplest of stumbles. The financiers, mostly venture capitalists, demanded high performance growth so they could dump the company and do it all over again with some other crazy idea. This is an unnatural way to do business. Most businesses stabilize and become fixtures. Not so with tech, where everything seems like a fad.Online customers can easily drop one thing and flock to another. Thus, Twitter’s $2.5 billion in revenue could drop to a billion — or nothing — almost overnight. It cannot just stabilize and coast for as long as possible, or die a natural death, or morph the way AOL morphed. It is a spawn of the go-go tech grow-like-crazy-or-die syndrome. The irony is that such companies often get acquired by other growth-oriented places like Google or Facebook. What happens then? They slowly die a natural death … usually quicker.Twitter, unlike many of these operations, has a different dimension, though. It’s a kind of public service. It breaks news and can trigger revolutions or protests. It’s casual, too. Twitter is an enjoyable product if you are not attacked by its mad dogs. That’s not to say there aren’t problems with Twitter. There is some sort of corruption with the “Who to follow” recommendations; it seldom makes sense especially for those signing up for a new account. Maybe that’s part of its advertising, although I do not think so. There is a lot of spam. I find fake accounts daily and do not see how they can possibly remain unless Twitter wants phony numbers. That said, its core users seem content.Which brings us to the second solution, which is simple. Do what LinkedIn did and add a premium tier. I’d pay $5 or $10 a year for an upper tier account. There are over 300 million active users. Sell them something! How hard can it be? John C. Dvorak How to Solve Twitter’s Biggest Problems Next Article

Vermont’s movement to become the first state to consider legalizing recreational marijuana without a vote of the people got derailed this week when Gov. Phil Scott vetoed the measure.Scott rejected a bill that allowed for possession of small amounts of marijuana. The measure also created a commission to study how to set up a regulated adult-use marijuana market in the state, with recommendations on how it might work delivered by November. It did not create a regulated adult-use marijuana market, such as voter-passed measures did in eight states, including Colorado, Washington and California (a distinction lost in many media reports). Scott, a Republican, rejected it, anyway. However, he also made it clear he’s not opposed to legalization and left the door open to compromise. The only roadblock to completing a deal will likely be members of his own party.Related: Congressional Cannabis Caucus Unites to Protect Marijuana IndustryNot philosophically opposed. The other eight states to legalize recreational marijuana all did so through a popular vote by the people. Vermont lawmakers wanted to make possession legal through legislation, and also set up a commission that could eventually recommend how the state could create, regulate and tax an adult-use marijuana market.Other states have watched closely how things turn out in Vermont. Some lawmakers in Illinois, for example, are considering introducing similar legislation. Their issue mirrors that in other states – they want the tax money marijuana brings in to help balance the state budget. For Scott, marijuana legalization presents a bit of a legal quagmire. A Republican serving his first year in office, Scott has politicians in his party vehemently opposed to legalized, adult-use marijuana. However, the bill, passed in the Legislature by a narrow margin, had approval of 57 percent of the state’s voters, according to this survey from March.Scott told reporters after his veto of the bill that he is “not philosophically opposed to eliminating the prohibition on marijuana,” he just wants some changes.Related: San Diego Company Bids to Become First Marijuana Business on NYSEFew changes needed.Actually, the changes Scott wants are relatively minor, leading Vermont newspaper the Burlington Free Press to report there might be a deal by summer. Most of Scott’s issues are about kids and time. He wants:Longer sentences for those who use marijuana in front of children or offer it to children, as well as more severe penalties for driving under the influence of marijuanaMore time for the state to study the regulatory structure needed to have a legal marijuana market, perhaps pushing it back to 2019 or beyondThe Vermont Legislature goes back into session in late June and there could be a compromise worked out there. State Sen. Dick Sears, a Democrat, told the Free-Press its “not a slam dunk but it’s possible.”But while Scott has proposed a compromise, his own party may keep it from happening. Rep. Don Turner, a Republican, said the majority of Republicans lawmakers remain opposed to legalization and will not likely change their minds.Follow dispensaries.com on Twitter to stay up to date on the latest cannabis news. What Brands Can Learn From Lilly Pulitzer and Target’s Sold-Out Collaboration Add to Queue –shares Learn from renowned serial entrepreneur David Meltzer how to find your frequency in order to stand out from your competitors and build a brand that is authentic, lasting and impactful. Nina Zipkin Enroll Now for $5 Retail April 20, 2015 Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brand Next Article 3 min read Lilly Pulitzer’s headquarters in King of Prussia, Penn., is nicknamed the Pink Palace – but shoppers who hoped to get their hands on the preppy apparel maker’s line for Target might be feeling blue. That’s because the 250-piece limited-edition collection sold out almost immediately yesterday – in stores and online – with no plans of it coming back. The collaboration with Lilly Pulitzer is the most recent in a long line of designer partnerships between Target and high-end brands like Altazurra, Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung, Zac Posen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen and, of course, Missoni, which also had the distinction of crashing Target’s website when it debuted in 2011.Related: Can Target’s New CEO Re-Energize the Big Retailer?Items in the vibrantly patterned Lilly Pulitzer for Target collection ranged from $2 to $150, with the most expensive dress going for $44 dollars. Dresses in Lilly Pulitzer’s main collection retail from $88 to $348 and are sold at high-end retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, as well as through the company’s website. Many of these high-low collaborations have been wildly popular, but do they actually help or hinder brands in the long run? Laura Ries, co-founder of branding consultancy Ries & Ries, says while this latest collection sold instantaneously, she wonders how it will impact Lilly Pulitzer’s core business – and if future high-low partnerships could end up devaluing it down the line.Related: You Don’t Create Your Company’s Brand — You Discover It.”The more popular it is at Target, the worse it is for Lilly Pulitzer the brand,” she says. “You see the same things happen with the outlets for some brands. Look at what happened to Coach; their outlet business went like hotcakes because you were getting Coach bags at the third of the price and, long term, it hit the exclusivity of their core business. Part of what drives high-end fashion is exclusivity.”Denise Lee Yohn, a retail consultant and the author of What Great Brands Do, says that though the prices were considerably lower, the limited nature of Lilly’s line at Target could end up bolstering the company’s exclusive reputation. “Even among the mass consumers that have an opportunity to buy it, it’s pretty much guaranteed they are going to get shut out…It almost makes the brand even more in-demand.”Related: How Can I Tell If There Will Be Strong Demand for My Product?Lee Yohn says she thinks that the collaborations are often a win-win, the designers can promote their brand and reach a different customer base while the Targets of the world can elevate their retail brand by association with the high end and exclusive. However, there is a downside to the frenzy: the reselling (and requisite marking up) of these hot-ticket items on sites like eBay. “That is less of a win for the retailer and the designer, because then it diminishes the strategy they are trying to implement.”Lee Yohn said that while it might inspire a raft of social media criticism, to protect the equity of the brand, next time, Target might want to look into setting a limit on how many items people could purchase. “In the long run, it might be a smarter way to do it.” Related: 7 Innovators That Changed Retail Forever Staff Writer. There will obviously be testing to check the molecule is safe. And we need to show that it’s different from alcohol. We will demonstrate that it doesn’t produce toxicity like alcohol does and doesn’t have the bad effects of alcohol.” We know where in the brain alcohol has its ‘good’ effects and ‘bad’ effects, and what particular receptors mediate that. The effects of alcohol are complicated but… you can target the parts of the brain you want to target.” Commenting on the place Alcarelle may take in the alcohol industry, global drinks analyst, Jonny Forsyth, says the future is promising, given that the industry is increasingly investing in alcohol alternatives:”If the science is right, and if it’s easy to mask the taste, I think it’s got a great chance”. By Sally Robertson, B.Sc.Mar 27 2019Reviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Professor David Nutt, an expert in neuropsychopharmacology, is aiming to make hangovers a thing of the past by introducing a synthetic alcohol alternative that provides the relaxing effects of alcohol, without causing hangovers and health problems. Jag_cz | ShutterstockNutt, who oversees the neuropsychopharmacology unit at the Imperial College London, believes that the alcohol substitute, which he has named “Alcarelle,” could change alcohol consumption, if it becomes regulated and available on the market.Nutt first discovered an antidote to alcohol in 1983 when studying the effects that alcohol has on the Gaba system. He realised that the antidote was too dangerous, but continued researching how Gaba receptors respond under the influence of alcohol.Nutt has now learned that 15 subtypes of Gaba receptor are present in multiple regions of the brain and that alcohol will bind to all of them. However, Alcarelle, he claims, can stimulate the Gaba receptors that cause tipsiness, without stimulating the receptors that induce negative effects such as headaches: Furthermore, the way in which Alcarelle binds to a receptor can be modified to produce different effects, meaning a person could choose to feel the effects of drinking, whilst avoiding inebriation.Nutt and colleagues have been working on the Alcarelle molecule, also referred to as “alcosynth,” for more than a decade, but the final hurdle they face is bringing the product to the masses.“The real challenge is taking that molecule to a drink. The regulatory side is much harder than the science,” explains Nutt, who is currently working with his partner David Orren to raise the £20 million it would cost to bring Alcarelle to the market. However, the researchers have adopted a five-year plan in collaboration with food scientists to have the molecule regulated as a food additive or ingredient. Citation: Airbus overtakes Boeing, says could halt A380 programme (Update) (2018, January 15) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-01-airbus-flies-boeing-aircraft.html © 2018 AFP Airbus and Boeing eye lucrative maintenance market Explore further European aerospace giant Airbus overtook arch-rival Boeing in terms of aircraft orders last year, but warned that it could cease making its A380 jet if it does not receive any more orders for the supersize plane. Airbus said that without new orders from Dubai-based airline, Emirates, it will be forced to halt its A380 programme Airbus said it booked a total 1,109 aircraft orders and a record 718 deliveries in 2017.By comparison, US rival Boeing booked 912 orders and 763 deliveries. Chief operating officer Fabrice Bregier said that overall deliveries could rise to 800 this year, given the increased pace of production of its A320neo aircraft. The medium-haul A320neo and A321neo jets feature new generation engines that use 15 percent less fuel compared to their peers.”We are going to double the number of A320neos” delivered this year, Bregier told a news conference. “If we do that, we will be close to 800 deliveries in 2018.”He acknowledged that deliveries of the A320neo had been slowed last year by problems with the engines made by US firm Pratt & Withney and by CFM, the joint venture of General Electric and Safran. Nevertheless, the problems were gradually being resolved and around 30 aircraft were waiting for their engines, down from 60 at the beginning of the year, he said.Turning to the A380, sales director, John Leahy, warned that Airbus would have no choice but to halt the programme if Dubai’s Emirates airline—the main customer for the superjumbo launched in 2007—did not place another order.”We are still talking to Emirates, but honestly, they are probably the only one to have the ability right now on the market place to take a minimum of six per year on a period of eight to 10 years,” Leahy said.”Quite honestly, if we can’t work out a deal with Emirates there is no choice but to shut down the programme,” Leahy said.”But I’m hopeful that we work out a deal with Emirates,” he added. There have been a total of 317 orders for the A380, the world’s largest passenger airliner, since its launch.Airbus had been hoping to secure another major order from Emirates, which took delivery of its 100th A380 in 2017, at the Dubai Air Show in November. But the airline finally picked 40 Boeing 787-10 jets instead.Lower trajectoryCOO Bregier said the “trajectory will be to go lower” in production of the A380.”We will deliver 12 aircraft as planned in 2018,” and the number could fall to six per year in subsequent years, Bregier said. “The challenge will be to maintain at least this level in the years to come” before customers start placing replacement orders for the A380s they currently have in service, and “potential new markets” start opening up, he said.Turning to Airbus’ overall performance last year, the planemaker insisted that commercial aircraft deliveries in 2017 “were up for the 15th year in a row, reaching a new company record.” At the end of 2017, Airbus’ overall backlog stood at 7,265 aircraft valued at $1.059 trillion (867 billion euros) at list prices, the company said.”A new Airbus delivery record coupled with our fourth best order intake wraps up a remarkable year for us,” Bregier insisted.

In the future there could be around 9.7 billion people—around 2.2 billion more than today. Global demand for food will increase as climate change leaves more and more soil infertile. How should future generations feed themselves?Kristian Kersting, Professor of Machine Learning at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, and his team see a potential solution in the application of artificial intelligence (AI). Machine learning, a special method of AI, could be the basis for so-called precision farming, which could be used to achieve higher yields on areas of equal or smaller size. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Partners are the Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation (INRES) at the University of Bonn and the Aachen-based company Lemnatec.”First of all, we want to understand what physiological processes in plants look like when they suffer from stress,” said Kersting. “Stress occurs, for example, when plants do not absorb enough water or are infected with pathogens. Machine learning can help us to analyse these processes more precisely.” This knowledge could be used to cultivate more resistant plants and to combat diseases more efficiently. The researchers installed a hyperspectral camera that records a broadwave spectrum and provides deep insights into the plants. The more data available on the physiological processes of a plant during its growth cycle, the better a software is able to identify recurring patterns that are responsible for stress. However, too much data can be a problem, as the calculations become too complex. The researchers therefore need algorithms that use only part of the data for learning without sacrificing accuracy.Kersting’s team found a clever solution: To evaluate the data, the team used a highly advanced learning process from language processing, which is used, for example, at Google News. There, an AI selects the relevant articles for the reader from tens of thousands of new articles every day and sorts them by topic. This is done using probability models in which all words of a text are assigned to a specific topic. Kersting’s trick was to treat the hyperspectral images of the camera like words: The software assigns certain image patterns to a topic such as the stress state of the plant. The researchers are currently working on teaching the software to optimise itself using deep learning and to find the patterns that represent stress more quickly. “A healthy spot can for instance be identified from the chlorophyll content in the growth process of the plant,” said Kersting. “When a drying process occurs, the measured spectrum changes significantly.” The advantage of machine learning is that it can recognise such signs earlier than a human expert, as the software learns to pay attention to more subtleties. It is hoped that someday, cameras can be installed along rows of plants on an assembly line in the greenhouse, allowing the software to point out abnormalities at any time. Through a constant exchange with plant experts, the system should also learn to identify even unknown pathogens. “Ultimately, our goal is a meaningful partnership between human and artificial intelligence, in order to address the growing problem of world nutrition,” says Kersting. In order to improve world food conditions, a team around computer science professor Kristian Kersting was inspired by the technology behind Google News. Provided by Technische Universitat Darmstadt

enforcement would ensure it doesn’t fall into ineligible hands Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem and state health officials had raised a number of concerns about regulation and public safety“The problem is the state has no ability to control regulate and have the quality control that’s necessary” in the current process for prescription drugs regulated by the federal Food and Drug Administration Weisz saidWhile committee members sympathized with the parents “We just felt that the concerns and the risks at this point in time outweigh the potential benefits … for a small group that feels that none of the currently available drugs work” he saidThe bill’s prime sponsor Rep Pamela Anderson D-Fargo said it was “not a drug issue but a quality of life” issue She read the names of all 23 states that have legalized medical marijuana – including neighboring Minnesota and Montana – and the 10 states considering legislation to make it legal“The states are blue and red all across the country” she said “This is not a partisan issue”The original bill – crafted from information from the Council for State Governments based on what other states have done – was amended to remove a provision allowing medical marijuana cardholders to grow their own marijuana and to clarify that smoking cannabis wasn’t a medical use Anderson said “The bill before you is much more restrictive than the model bill and makes more sense for North Dakota” she saidRep Dwight Kiefert R-Valley City a committee member said there was no hard evidence that marijuana has medical benefits“We pass legislation here based on facts But if somebody wants to share a fact that it helps somebody I’d be glad to hear it” he said The state Department of Health projected 8135 patients and 4068 caregivers would register for medical marijuana during the 2015-17 bienniumRep Kathy Hawken R-Fargo who co-sponsored the bill said she has a son who suffers from seizures “and his neurologist said ‘I am really sorry that I cannot prescribe this’ ” But she agreed with Weisz that standards are lacking for medical marijuana which she hopes will be addressed in time“But we’re having the conversation and that is a good thing and someday this really is a good bill” she said Reach Nowatzki at (701) 255-5607 or by email at mnowatzki@forumcommcomWhat’s the attraction” Do you always seem to be out of glueHillary
