The Wicked Fandom Couldn’t Be HappierThere are a lot of Wicked family members among the nominees: Carmen Cusack and Saycon Sengbloh have both played Elphaba, Megan Hilty was a memorable Glinda, Christopher Fitzgerald was the original Boq and Alex Brightman was a replacement Boq. Jayne Houdyshell was a Madame Morrible, Alex Lacamoire was a music director, and, of course, Joe Mantello directed the blockbuster musical. That’s eight thrillifying connections to the Land of Oz, and we didn’t even mention The Crucible witches. View Comments Love Is All AroundOf the 39 productions that opened during the 2015-2016 Broadway season, 26 had one or more Tony nominations. Eight closed shows received nods as well. It’s so nice to have great work remembered. That’s the way to spread joy! Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Breaks the RecordHamilton is now in the history books as having the most Tony nominations ever with 16—beating out The Producers and Billy Elliot, which both previously held the record with 15. And if you don’t know, now you know. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Yes, it’s awards season. You can call it HamilTony time if you must, and though mega-hit Hamilton nabbed a record-breaking number of nods, there are still plenty more seats at the Broadway table. In addition to a community that honors excellence, diversity (14 acting nominees are people of color) and flying witches (see below), the Tony nominators were even-handed in making new friends (seven acting nominees made their Broadway debut this season) and old (eight acting nominees already have a Tony at home). Making America Great AgainLast year’s Best Musical nominees were all over the map with three out of four set in far-flung places like Paris (An American in Paris), England (Something Rotten!) and wherever The Visit was supposed to be—but it sure didn’t feel like Kansas. This year, all five nominees (Bright Star, Hamilton, School of Rock, Shuffle Along and Waitress) take place in the U.S. of A., or at least in the 13 original colonies. Take FiveThere are five nominees for Best Musical and Best Revival of a Play instead of the usual four. In the Best Musical category, this has only happened twice before (in 1958 and 1960). As for the Best Revival of a Play category, which has only been around since 1994, it has never happened. Why did it happen this year? Vermont Governor Jim Douglas today announced the creation of a Health Care Cabinet, to help coordinate Vermont’s nationally recognized health reform initiatives across several agencies and departments and to help implement any health reforms that may be enacted at the federal level in the near future. The Cabinet will be comprised of representatives from agencies and departments with jurisdiction over health care services, policy, regulation and implementation, among other responsibilities.“The Health Care Cabinet provides an excellent opportunity to continue to build on Vermont’s successes in the health care arena – to identify efficiencies and new, creative ideas to help Vermont residents. Collaboration across state government will be especially critical as we work to analyze the impact of and plan for the implementation of any national health care reforms. I’m pleased to have such a great team of people working together on this important issue,” said Governor Douglas.Governor Douglas has appointed as co-chairs of the Cabinet Dr. Susan Besio, Director of Health Care Reform and Director of the Office of Vermont Health Access, and Heidi Tringe, Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs. “I want to thank Susan and Heidi for taking on this important task.” Douglas continued. “This is an efficient way for us to ensure that we are communicating regularly as federal reforms move through Washington.” Meetings will be held monthly beginning in November. Topics of discussion will include an analysis of federal health reform proposals and the impact of the economic downturn on health care. … Albion draw bye into finals.THE hectic Berbice 2019 cricket season continued, on Saturday last, with the hosting of the second round of the BCB/RHTYSC Busta Champion of Champions 40-over tournament at three venues.The tournament, which is being sponsored by the Guyana Beverage Company, under its Busta brand, is one of four division tournaments organised by the vibrant BCB and thirty-two overall for 2019 at different levels. Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt Flour defeated Blairmont by eight wickets while Tucber Park CC demolished a youthful Port Mourant CC by 198 runs at Port Mourant. Albion CC cruised past Young Warriors by 102 runs at Albion to advance to the final after drawing a bye in the semifinals.At the Area ‘H’ Ground, Blairmont won the toss and decided to bat first. An aggressive Naseem Nazeer stuck a massive six off left-arm spinner, Keith Simpson, off the first ball of the match and repeated it two deliveries later. Simpson got his revenge when he bowled Nazeer for 18 (3 sixes) in the third over at 24 for 1, to start a collapse.Blairmont were bowled out for a meagre 77 from 24.2 overs as the home team bowlers held a tight line. Marvon Prashad was the only other batsman to reach double figures with 19. Discarded national off-spinner, Eon Hooper, continued his fine form with the ball with 5 wickets for 13 runs from eight impressive overs.Leg-spinner Shawn Pereira supported with 3 for 33 while national junior player, Jonathan Rampersaud, took one wicket for no runs. In response, Junior Sinclair scored 35 while veteran Khemraj Mahadeo was unbeaten on 30 as RHTNTF reached 80 for 2 from 14.2overs.At the Port Mourant ground, Tucber Park, led by 61 from Guyana Under-19 player, Garfield, reached an imposing 289 for 4 from 40 overs. He received support from Anthony D’Andrade (46), Maxine De Jonge (40) and Damion Van Tull (35 not out). Port Mourant, in reply, were bundled out for 91 in 20 overs with Madhan Boodram (24) and West Indies Under-15 player, Rampertab Ramnauth (20) being the principal scorers.Off-spinner Martin Singh claimed 7 for 34 from seven destructive overs while E. Tanner took 2 for 6. Tucber Park would face defending Champions, Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt in the lone semifinals at the Area ‘H’ Ground.The Albion Community Centre Cricket Club amassed 273 for 9 from their allotted 40 overs. Former junior player, Kandasammy Surujnarine, struck a majestic 95, while former Guyana senior player, Rajiv Ivan made 35 and Anthonio February 22. Left-arm medium-pacer Devin Ramoutar and left-arm spinner Kassim Khan were YWCC best bowlers with 3 for 52 and 2 for 51 respectively.The visitors, in reply, were restricted to 171 for 8 despite 40 from Ishwar Singh, Linden Austin (36) and Vishal Mohabir (28). Under-17 off-spinner Sarwan Chaitnarine was Albion’s best bowler with 3 for 33 from eight overs. Albion would now await the winner of the semifinals.
Juventus have completed the signing of Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli for €90 million, it has been confirmed.The Argentine striker has long been linked with a move to the Serie A champions, having already agreed personal terms earlier in July.The 28-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with Massimiliano Allegri’s side, which will see him pocket €7m per year. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis had told Juve director Giuseppe Marotta that they would have to match Higuain’s release clause to sign the forward, which was believed to be €94.7m, but that clause was only for the player himself to buy his way out of the club. The clause for any potential buyers was set at €90m.Juve have matched that fee, which will be paid in two instalments of €45m, and have sent the contracts to the Lega Serie A, who have listed Higuain as a Bianconeri player.Higuain, who scored 36 goals in 35 Serie A games last season, joined Napoli in 2013 and was tied to the club until June 2018.
