These vehicles can be used in neighborhoods for local trips and could help cities reach Climate Action Plan goals by giving residents zero emission transportation options. To operate NEVs, drivers must have a valid driver license, registration, and insurance.SANDAG sponsored the legislation, which was carried by Senator Pat Bates, who represents the 36th Senate District covering South Orange County, North San Diego County, and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Senate Bill 1151 received support from a wide range of organizations including the Center for Sustainable Energy, the Electric Vehicle Association of San Diego, and the Sierra Club. BNP activists clash with police AL men

first_imgRuling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) activists have locked in clashes with BNP activists escorting BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to a makeshift court in Bakshibazar of the capital. As the former prime minister reached the Moghbazar crossing, several hundreds of BNP activists joined her motorcade, slowing the pace of Khaleda’s vehicle. But just as the motorcade crossed the Moghbazar crossing, it was met with a stones hurled from one side of the road. BNP activists retaliated and clashes ensued.Details of the clashes were not known immediately.BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia left her Gulshan residence to appear in the make-shift court in Old Dhaka’s Bakshibazar that is set to deliver its verdict in a graft case against her today.Khaleda Zia started around 11:45am from Gulshan as the city witnessed massive presence of law enforcement. The authorities have strengthened security around the court on the Alia Madrasa ground in Bakshibazar area for the announcement of judgement in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. The court on 25 January set 8 February to deliver the verdict in the case that implicated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia, her son and senior BNP vice chairman Tarique Rahman and four others. The ACC filed the graft case, during the quasi-military regime of Fakhruddin Ahmed in July 2008, accusing them of misappropriating Tk 21 million that had come as grants from a foreign bank for orphans. The four other accused are former BNP lawmaker Salimul Haq Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, former principal secretary to the prime minister Kamal Uddin Siddique and nephew of late president Ziaur Rahman, Mominur Rahman.last_img read more

Housing minister calls for duty cut on liquor

first_imgMosharraf HossainHousing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain on said on Monday that the duties on liquor in the country should be reduced to attract more foreigners to the country’s tourist sites, news agency UNB reports.”The foreigners do not like the rate of the liquor that they are paying in the bars,” he said in his speech on budget for the 2018-19 fiscal in the Parliament. The minister also urged the government to increase the licensed bars of the country.”Currently there are only 96 bars in the country that have government license,” he said. The minister also said that in Gulshan and Banani areas of the capital city, there are many restaurants which are serving liquor but they do not pay the regular taxes to the government exchequer.”Give them legal license those who are serving these,” he said.He also urged the government to take applicable taxes from these bars in the national exchequer. The minister also requested the government to reduce the proposed registration tax on flat for boosting up the real estate sector of the country.”Make it 7 per cent for flat registration,” he suggested.last_img read more

NATO asks Russia free seized Ukrainian ships

first_imgNATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg gives a press conference following tensions between Russia and Ukraine at NATO headquarters in Brussels, on 26 November 2018. Photo: AFPNATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Monday demanded Russia free Ukrainian ships and sailors held after clashes off Crimea, warning Moscow that “its actions have consequences”.Russia fired on and then seized three Ukrainian ships on Sunday, accusing them of illegally entering its waters in the Sea of Azov, in a dramatic spike in tensions that raises fears of a wider escalation.Stoltenberg held phone talks with Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko before officials from the two sides held emergency talks at alliance headquarters in Brussels.”There is no justification for the use of military force against Ukrainian ships and naval personnel, so we call on Russia to release immediately the Ukrainian sailors and ships it seized yesterday,” Stoltenberg told reporters after the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission.”And we call for calm and restraint.”Kiev accused Russia of launching “a new phase of aggression”, which annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.The Ukrainian military has been put on high alert and the country’s parliament is to vote on a request by Poroshenko to impose martial law for 60 days.Ukraine has also urged its Western allies to step up existing sanctions implemented against Russia over Crimea and its role in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine between the government and pro-Moscow separatists.Stoltenberg said the 29 NATO allies reiterated their support for Ukrainian sovereignty, saying they would never recognise Russia’s claim to Crimea.”Russia has to understand that its actions have consequences — that’s the reason why NATO has reacted so firmly against the actions of Russia against Ukraine over several years,” the former Norwegian premier said, without giving details of possible consequences but pointing to economic sanctions imposed by the West on Russia.Stoltenberg said Poroshenko had assured him that the proposed martial law would not interfere with upcoming presidential elections planned for 31 March.Moscow has blamed Kiev for the incident, drawing a barbed response on Twitter from the US Special Envoy for Ukraine Negotiations, Kurt Volker.”Russia rams Ukrainian vessel peacefully travelling toward a Ukrainian port. Russia seizes ships and crew and then accuses Ukraine of provocation???” Volker tweeted.Tensions have been building over the Kerch Strait, where Russia has built a new bridge that gives it a land connection to Crimea.Kiev has accused Moscow of blocking access for Ukrainian ships though the strait, the only way in and out of the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea.last_img read more
