first_imgMSA (NYSE: MSA) announced today that it has been awarded a two-year $45 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract from the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia (DSCP) to supply U.S. military forces with Advanced Combat Helmets. Delivery of the helmets will begin in the third quarter of 2009, pending first article testing and certification.MSA began producing ballistic helmets for the U.S. military in 2002 and, in partnership with the U.S. Army, developed the concept for the Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH). The ACH incorporates a lightweight design that offers soldiers advanced ballistic protection with greater comfort, stability and situational awareness. Since adoption by the Army as the standard basis of issue, the ACH has been credited with saving numerous lives in military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.”Following the completion of several long-term ACH contracts, this award represents a new and exciting phase of ACH production at MSA,” said Bill Lambert, MSA President and Chief Executive Officer. “We’re grateful for the trust the U.S. military has placed in MSA and for the opportunity to continue to serve as a partner in the effort to provide our fighting men and women in uniform with the highest level of protection possible.”Lambert noted that the ACH award represents particularly good news for MSA employees located at the company’s manufacturing facility in Newport, Vt. “Our associates there have done an exemplary job in meeting the ballistic helmet needs of the U.S. Army since we began production there in 2002. This latest award gives MSA the opportunity to continue ACH production at Newport and leverage the broad ballistic protection expertise our associates there have attained over the past several years.”U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), senior member of the U.S. Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and Co-Chair of the U.S. Senate National Guard Caucus, was equally pleased with the military’s decision to have ACH production continue in his home state. “The men and women at MSA of Newport have delivered tens of thousands of expertly made helmets to the U.S. Army,” Senator Leahy said. “These Vermonters have put their skill and energy and dedication into those helmets, which have saved soldiers’ lives during hard deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. This long-term sustainment purchase secures Newport’s place as a preferred military helmet supplier for the next two years and, I hope, beyond. “MSA also provides ballistic helmets to special branches of the U.S. Department of Defense, military forces in Europe, and the Canadian Military.Established in 1914, MSA is a global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of safety products that protect people’s health and safety. Trojans hold off Cardinal

first_imgThe USC men’s basketball team seems to feel right at home at the Galen Center.Floor general · Senior point guard Mike Gerrity played all 40 minutes of Saturday’s game against the Stanford Cardinal, contributing 11 points, two assists and a key block of a 3-point attempt late in the game. – Avi Kushlan | Daily Trojan The Trojans (14-9, 6-5) used some late-game heroics in front of an energized home crowd to hold off Stanford (10-13, 4-7) on Saturday, withstanding several rallies from the Cardinal en route to a 54-49 victory. The win avenges USC’s one-point loss to Stanford earlier in the season and moves USC into a five-way tie for second place in the Pac-10.Sophomore center Nikola Vucevic carried much of the Trojans’ offensive load, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, including a late tip-in that gave USC the lead for good. Redshirt senior guard Mike Gerrity added 11 points and sophomore forward Leonard Washington contributed nine points off the bench. But it was defense that ultimately gave the Trojans the advantage.“I couldn’t be more proud of our guys,” said USC coach Kevin O’Neill. “We really did a great job of executing defensively down the stretch. For us to hold them to 49 [points] and 30 [percent shooting] is really a heck of a job.”With the exception of Stanford guard Landry Fields — who had 27 points on 10-for-19 shooting — USC was able to largely snuff out the Cardinal attack, limiting all other players to six points or less. This was the seventh game this season that the Trojans — whose defense currently ranks second in the nation in points per game allowed — held their opponent to under 50 points.USC once again jumped to an early lead in the first half, going on a 9-2 run to start the game. But after trailing by as many as 14, the Cardinal stormed back by scoring 14 consecutive points, at one point leading 23-22. The game remained knotted for the rest of the first half, as USC was only able to take a one-point advantage into the break. In the second half, USC found its rhythm offensively, pulling out to an eight-point lead capped by a Washington dunk with 14 minutes left to play. But a 12-0 Stanford run, of which Fields scored nine, put the Cardinal back on top late in the game. USC responded with an 8-2 run of its own, but it was not until Vucevic — who couldn’t capitalize on a scoring chance at the end of the game in USC’s loss at Stanford earlier in the season — managed to convert a tip-in with 26 seconds left that was able to secure the victory.“[O’Neill] always gets on me about [the loss at Stanford], and he always tells me not to use one hand,” Vucevic said of his late-game score. “So this game, he told me to just crash the boards and use two hands and it worked out.”The Trojans remain one game out of first place, but they were able to jump into a tie for second because of Arizona and Arizona State losses. The loss moves Stanford into last place in the conference.“It says a lot about our guys, when you go down four like that, to just hang in,” O’Neill said. “We hung in there long enough to get the win and that’s all that really counts. For us, this ended up being a heck of a night.”last_img read more

Vogel, the Trojans finished at 38-over-par 878 (287, 299, 292), landing them 14 strokes back from the winning Oklahoma State team on one of the toughest courses they will face all year.Kang and Vogel tied for fourth in individual scoring, at 5-over-par 215.Sophomore Martin Trainer said he was impressed by both teammates.“[Vogel] is very good,” Trainer said. “This will be a typical finish for him, top 10 almost every tournament. [Kang] we all knew was really good, and very impressive in practice. He surprised us these past couple of days, and I’m glad to see it”Kang had an impressive final round, shooting a 1-over-par 71 to elevate himself from seventh place. He had a turbulent first nine holes, shooting two bogeys, one double bogey, a birdie and the team’s only eagle of the tournament. On the second nine, he hit for one bogey and one birdie. On Monday, Kang had a solid first round, shooting for 3-over-par 73, with three birdies, four bogeys, and a double bogey. In the next round (which took place later Monday), Kang came back even stronger, hitting a 1-over-par 71 with three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. On Tuesday, Vogel shot a 3-over-par 73, bumping him up from fifth place to fourth. He hit four bogeys and one birdie on the day.On Monday, Vogel had a dominant first round, hitting a team low 2-under-par 68 with five birdies and three bogeys. In round two, Vogel hit for 4-over-par 74, with one birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey.Third for the Trojans was Trainer, who finished tied for 26th with a 14-over-par 224.Trainer overcame a tough first day to hit a stellar 2-over-par 72, elevating himself 10 places. On Monday, Trainer shot a 4-over-par 74 and an 8-over-par 78, and sat in 36th place.Sophomore Stewart Hagestad hit a 6-over-par 76, with five bogeys, one double bogey and a birdie. This left him in 35th place, following a tough first day where he shot a 4-over-par 74 and a 7-over-par 77.Rounding out the Trojan squad was junior Steve Lim, who hit a 10-over-par 80 to finish tied for 39th.On Monday, Lim had a mediocre second round (7-over-par 77) following a strong first round where he hit for 2-over-par 72. Lim missed the last tournament because of a family conflict. These results are a complete turnaround from the Trojan’s last outing, the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview. The Trojans finished their first tournament with a disappointing last-place finish in a field of 15, hitting 84 strokes over par.The progress reminds Trainer of last season, and he remains optimistic.“Last year we were weak at the start of the year, and by the end we were one of the strongest teams out there,” Trainer said. “Hopefully this rate of improvement keeps up. We hung in there and did well. ”The Trojan’s next outing is against Georgia Tech at the The Golf Club of Georgia on Oct. 24-26.last_img read more

first_imgIOWA CITY — — The University of Iowa announced this morning that a separation agreement has been tendered with head strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle effective today. The statement from the athletic department says the university’s Office of General Counsel has engaged the Kansas City law firm of Husch Blackwell to conduct an independent review of issues and allegations relating to racial disparities within the football program. Doyle in a written statement says he’s grateful for the opportunity to work with incredible players, coaches and support staff. He also says he’s confident that his record and character will be confirmed in the course of the independent review. Doyle says with the separation agreement it’s time to move on from Iowa football, and he and his family are looking forward to the next chapter. Doyle was placed on administrative leave a week ago after several former Hawkeye players made accusations against him on social media.last_img read more

A Look at Desktop Environments XFCE

August 29, 2019

| twfpnmmd

first_imgA Look at Desktop Environments: XFCE by Mike Turcotte-McCusker on March 30, 2017 in Linux – Last Update: March 29, 2017 – 8 comments Xfce is yet another lightweight but highly customizable desktop environment many people use for GNU/Linux, and is the environment of choice for systems such as Xubuntu, and Manjaro (Although Manjaro does come in other flavours, Xfce is known as the Manjaro teams initial focus and was their primary DE for a while.). The Xfce website (http://xfce.org/about) on their about page describes Xfce as, “Xfce embodies the traditional UNIX philosophy of modularity and re-usability. It consists of a number of components that provide the full functionality one can expect of a modern desktop environment. They are packaged separately and you can pick among the available packages to create the optimal personal working environment.”This is the fourth part of a series. Click on these links to read reviews of KDE, Mate and GNOME.A Look at Desktop Environments: XFCEThe machine I used for this has the following specs:Intel i5-4210U8GB DDR3SSDRunning Linux Mint 18.1 XFCE 64bitCustomization and Default Appearance Xfce by default doesn’t look too terrible in my opinion, and mint in their OS has packaged quite a few different wallpapers and themes with the system so that unless you are truly a deep themer, you should be able to make your system look relatively how you’d like without much hassle. I personally prefer using a darker theme; thankfully there were a few I had available to me by default, so changing that was short and sweet. Most Xfce installs I have come across use the Whisker menu by default and Mint was no exception to that. However, as stated in a previous article, I am not a fan of the Whisker menu (to the surprise of many apparently), and so I opted to switch that menu out for a more traditional applications menu. Xfce has the ability to use GTK 2.x and GTK 3.x themes, so visiting https://www.gnome-look.org/ will give the user plenty of themes available to choose from for those who simply do not like the ones packaged with their OS. However, be aware that Xfce does plan to fully shift to GTK 3.x completely in the future.Default Software Just like with pretty well any modern desktop environment available, Xfce has it’s own default software for completing the generic default tasks. The default file manager known as Thunar, is one such example. Thunar is pretty straight forward; it’s nowhere near as customizable or powerful as others such as Dolphin, but it does what it needs to do and does it well nonetheless. The interface is clean, organized and minimalistic. Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment, so you’ll find that most of the prepackaged software is minimalistic but still remaining fully functional. Don’t expect all the bells and whistles; you’ll want KDE or GNOME for that. Some other software that is included by default in Xfce are:Xfce-Terminal – a no frills terminal emulator. Nice, simple, does what you need.Xfwm – the Xfce window manager. No animations by default, but does feature compositing.Xfburn – CD/DVD/BRD burning software. Mousepad – In Xubuntu and others Distros, this is your notepad software. It’s nice and easy to use, howeve Linux Mint opted to replace it with xed, another lightweight text editor. Depending on your distro of choice, a plethora of other software will be included as well, it’s just noteworthy that Xfce does not itself actually ship with a great deal of custom software. There are others listed as well as defaults for Xfce, they can be found here. (http://www.xfce.org/projects/)System Resources UsedSurprisingly, Xfce used more system resources than I had expected running minimal amount of software. With LibreOffice, Terminal, Firefox with two tabs open, the system was using 1.1GB of RAM, and my CPU sat at around 7-9% utilization. All in all, nothing this laptop couldn’t handle, but surprisingly it used more resources than other environments tested. I still would recommend Xfce to be used on less powerful systems, but I was just caught off guard by the amount of RAM used.Final Words Xfce is a lovely interface. It’s simple, it’s fast, it’s no frills but still attractive, it has everything you could need for general computer usage. I highly recommend Xfce for anyone who wants a mix of lightweight and minimalism with attractiveness and a clean look to things. What about you? What’s your thoughts on Xfce? What Desktop Environment do you use?More overviews coming soon!SummaryArticle NameA Look at Desktop Environments: XFCEDescriptionMike takes a look at the XFCE desktop environment in the fourth part of the series, and analyzes software, resource use and customization options.Author Mike TurcottePublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more
