Driver Finds Dog With Throat Cut, Mouth Duct-Taped in OhioWatch: Dog Rescued After Collapsing From Heatstroke During Hike Stay on target When the humans are away, the dogs will play feel lonely, bored, and despondent. To combat doggy depression, Audible and Cesar Millan teamed up to introduce audiobooks for pets. The platform, dubbed Audible for Dogs, features a rotating selection of titles, which aims to provide peace of mind for man and best friend when leaving your four-legged friend home alone.“Dogs are social animals, so they need to engage with someone, and the purpose of Audible for Dogs is to make dogs feel there is someone with them,” Millan said in a statement. “The person performing the audiobook is actually keeping your dog calm and taking the dog to a resting state, acting as an extension of you.”This week’s launch includes a free download of Cesar Millan’s Guide to Audiobooks for Dogs, an original piece written and narrated by the Dog Whisperer himself.Inspired by a 2015 study suggesting audiobooks are more effective than music for reducing stress in canines (the jury is still out in regards to human), Audible conducted its own research, in partnership with Millan’s Dog Psychology Center. The results, based on 100 puppy participants, showed that 76 percent of owners who played audiobooks in their absence saw an increase in relaxed behavior over a period of four weeks.Dogs seemed to respond best to narrators of the same gender as their primary owner, played at the average volume on an in-home listening device (i.e. don’t try to stick headphones into your pooch’s ears).Launch titles include Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood (performed by Noah), Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (performed by Rosamund Pike), W. Bruce Cameron’s A Dog’s Purpose, Garth Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain, Maria Goodavage’s Soldier Dogs: The Untold Story of America’s Canine Heroes, and Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows.“Your dog will never wax poetic about Rosamund Pike’s nuanced performance of Pride and Prejudice,” Audible Chief Content Officer Andy Gaies said. (Speak for yourself.) “But you will return home to a calmer, happier best friend.”Each curated story features an introduction by Millan, who has authored a handful of his own audiobooks, including How to Raise the Perfect Dog and Cesar’s Way.And, through 2017, Audible will donate a dime per download (up to $250,000) of the free audio original Cesar Millan’s Guide to Bringing Home a Shelter Dog to North Shore Animal League America.New listeners can sign up for a 30-day free trial; a subscription costs $14.95 per month (which is probably less than you’d pay for a dog sitter, anyway.)Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
